The initial water is brought to 163F
Bobby's homemade manifold for draining of the wort (water with grain sugars)
Bobby pours the grains
Bobby makes sure the grains are level (plus they're just fun to play with)
Bobby explains the process
A schnoodle mohawk
Adding the hot water to the grains
Stirring the grains to be sure the water penetrates to the bottom
Cute puppy break
After an hour, the first of the wort is sampled
And recirculated until it comes out free of grains
Wort is drained into the boiling pot
A layer of aluminum foil to keep the grains from being disturbed as more water is poured in
Cute puppy break!
Adding the second round of water
Draining more wort into the boiling pot
Bobby dumps the spent grains
Then discovers that he dumped the manifold too
Biodegrade!
The hops in proud array
Boiling the wort
Bobby lectures the class
Bobby keeps a watchful vigil on his boiling beer
The boiled wort is drained into the fermenting pail
Uh oh, leaks!
The wort is passed through a clever cooling apparatus, consisting of a copper pipe inside a garden hose. The wort runs through the copper pipe, and water is run through the garden hose to absorb the heat from the wort
The result is cool wort at the other end
Bobby and Jason get the last of the wort out of the boiling pot
Bobby adds the yeast
Capped with an airlock to let out the CO2 released during fermentation. Now we play the waiting game.
