Drilling template taped to 16x8x2 aluminum enclosure
Measuring the diameter of all the parts so I know what size holes to drill
Drilling template annotated -- hole sizes corrected, and there's lots of holes I don't need for the design I'm building
Drilling chassis holes
Using a jigsaw to open up the hole for the IEC power connector
Cutting down the 12x12 sheet of 1/8" G10 garolite
Drilling template taped to board
Clearcoating enclosure while I drill the board
Drilling holes for turrets, standoffs, etc
All holes drilled
Using a homemade tool to install the turrets in the board
Ready to start soldering
Done! I really like the clean, orderly look of a turret board layout
Routing wires in the chassis -- I really want to avoid the buzz/hum that my first (hi-fi) tube amp suffered from, so I'm being very careful about lead dress this time
Board installed, everything wired up, voltage tests complete. Time to try it out!
It works! And actually sounds pretty damn good. And so quiet! The careful, clean wiring definitely paid off.
1 1/8" hole drilled for octal tube socket
Too big! I guess it needed to be 1 1/16" for this socket.
Putting my machine tools to work
Screw holes drilled, shaped on the bandsaw
Edges cleaned up with a file
Like an adapter plate
Planning my wiring for the parallel octal socket
Octal socket wired in parallel with noval power tube socket (only one will be used at a time)
Heater wiring redone with teflon-coated, silver plated wire
Reassembled. The patchy stuff isn't as visible without the flash -- the clear coat seems to have developed a haze
EL34 installed in octal socket. Also have a 6L6GC to try
Bouquet of tubes!
Added modification to enable variable bias of power tube - used a Dremel to cut the shaft off the pot and cut a notch in it for screwdriver adjustment
Variable bias rear view -- a 1 ohm resistor between the test points, and a high precision 1k 2W pot for adjustment
An overall shot of the wiring as it stands now, with octal tube socket and variable bias, along with several other mods done to increase bass response
